Delivery Function Map
This template enables you to create a Delivery Function Map. This visual tool helps your organization identify inefficiencies in the software delivery process, primarily caused by poor communication and unclear ownership across functions.
The visual depicts the software delivery spectrum on the horizontal axis, ranging from abstract ideas about what should be offered to having that functionality delivered in the system in production. The vertical axis represents how close that discipline is to the system, that is, how much that role works on the actual system's content.
Inside, we outline the various functions involved in traditional IT organizations: sales and/or strategy, product design, product management, business analysis, software architecture, engineering management, and software development. You can split functions if you need to display more details (e.g., software development can be split into pure development, operations, and Q&A).
The ovals are the areas of impact for the particular function in your organization. The goal of your organization must be that the functions in the map are connected through their ovals. That's what will guarantee a smooth delivery process.
Organize a session with representatives from the various departments and analyze what your organization looks like. Identify gaps and weak connections, and remediate them.
